Our
Story
The congregation began in 1978 by Clyde & Hazel Kelley and Jack & Hazel Hanley of Como, Colorado. Clyde Kelley preached for a number of families who attended. In September of that year 2 lots were purchased in Fairplay where, shortly after, a foundation was laid. After several years had passed, Clyde Kelley resigned as the minister in 1981; however, there were four families who continued to meet. They met in the music room of the High School in Fairplay (Doug & Elva Hart, Jack & Hazel Henley, Jim & Judy Marvin, and Bob & DeAnna Wright).

In May of 1981 Bill & Glenda McCarty and their children started to attend & agreed to preach for the group. Bill’s full-time job was the Manager at Colorado Christian Service Camp. After a time, services were moved to the camp and attendance fluctuated. Many times the discussion came up about building a Church and in December of 1982, some of the congregation attended a Church Builders Club Meeting in Vail, Colorado. The first “call” of the Club went out on behalf of South Park Christian Chapel and many donations came in. Throughout the process of contracting and building there were many hardships that came. Financial hardships increased and winter came with snow & hail as workers & volunteers attempted to finish the construction, but throughout it all the prayers of the people were answered. Through assistance with Bob Girdwood, President of the Front Range Evangelizers Association, the money was raised to finish the building. Some of the volunteers stayed at Camp Como (also known as Colorado Christian Service Camp) during the time that they could give to use their skills & trades to assist in finishing the Church. Bill McCarty wrote, “With never doubting faith and continued confidence that our Father would find a way, and in the face of many setbacks, and disappointments and heartaches, we persevered and our blessed Father has established His work in Fairplay. Praise to His Divine Mercy! So will it always be!”
The work had been completed on May 26, 1985 and South Park Christian Chapel is still serving God in Fairplay, Colorado.
